Odell Hales

Amy Odell Hales, 91, of Rossville, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2024. She was born on Nov. 10, 1932, to the late Voyd and Maudie Mae Long. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband in 2003, Gordon Hales; brother, Johnny Long; sisters, Ann Mulkey, Dorothy “Dot” Fountain, and Ruby Holbert. 


Odell is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Floyd Murray; brothers and sisters-in-law, Coy and Rhonda Long, Wayne and Mildred Long, David and Cathy Long, Leslie Long, Jackie and Lee Long, Marvin and Mary Long; grandchild, Stephen (Tammy) Hales; great-grandchildren, Meagan Hales and John Gordon Hales, and a host of nieces and nephews. 


The family will receive friends on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2024, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home. 


Burial will be held in Crane Eater Cemetery.

Sylvia Holland

Sylvia Holland, 76, of White, Ga., passed away on Monday, Sept. 9, 2024. She was born in Calhoun on May 26, 1948, to the late Dock M. and Dymple Silvers Holland. 


Sylvia is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Shane and Angela Roberts; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Cindy Holland; grandchildren, Logan Roberts, Trinity Roberts, and Savannah Roberts; and cousin, Bobbi Defore and family. 


The family received friends on Friday, Sept. 20, 2024, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home. 


The funeral service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024, at 1:00 PM from New Zion Baptist Church. Her body will lie in state on Saturday at the Church from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM. Burial will follow in Fain Cemetery.

Lula Mae Sheriff

Lula Mae Sheriff, age 100, of Calhoun, passed away on Friday, Sept. 13, 2024 at Gordon Health & Rehabilitation.


Lula Mae was born on Jan. 24, 1924 in Hill City, Ga., the daughter of the late Henry Silver and Lenora Nance Silver. In addition to her parents, Lula Mae was also preceded in death by: her husband, Herman Sheriff; first husband, Edward Holmes; two sons, Dean Sheriff and Johnny Lee Sheriff; two daughters, Linda Faye Nix and Joan Brown; and sister, Myrtle Womack. 


She was a member of South Calhoun Baptist Church. Lula Mae loved gardening.


Lula Mae is survived by: two sons, Gary (Lisa Kay) Sheriff of Calhoun and Larry (Ann) Sheriff of Calhoun; two daughters, Rita (Robert) Cooper of Ringgold and Louise (Wayne) Brown of Sugar Valley; one sister, Pearl Robinson of Rome; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.


The family will receive friends on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024 from 5 PM until 7 PM at Thomas Funeral Home.


Funeral Services will be conducted on Sunday, September 15, 2024 at 2 PM from the Chapel of Thomas Funeral Home with Reverend Jason Pace officiating. Burial will follow in Blackwood Springs Cemetery.


Pallbearers serving include: Michael Brown, Michael Brown, Jr., Hunter Brown, Robert Cooper, and Brandon Cooper. Stanley Simpson will serve as an honorary pallbearer.

Wayne Townsend

Mr. Wayne Townsend, age 82, of Calhoun, departed this life Thursday Sept. 12, 2024 at his residence.
Wayne was born Feb. 22, 1942, in Cherokee County, a son of the late Clearance Otis “Ode” and Wyolene Holder Townsend. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sheryl Annette Townsend, and a sister, Lavern Townsend. 


Wayne proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he worked many years and retired from General Motors Doraville Plant. He then owned and operated Townsend Wrecker Service, Townsend Auto Garage and Repair. He also owned Townsend Antiques. Wayne was a fifty plus member of the Waleska Masonic Lodge #57 and was a member of Salacoa (Greeley) Baptist Church.


Wayne was smart, strong willed, funny, very kind, very passionate about his believes. His life was one of hard work and caring for others. 


He is survived by his daughter, Tracey Edwards of Lafayette, Ga.; grandchildren, Rebecca and Mike Jones, twins, Danielle Hardy, and Brittany and Karter McHan, Scott Burdette; great-grandchildren, Lucas Bonds, Claire Bonds, Alyssa England, and Kash McHan; brother, Randall Townsend of Fairmount, GA; sisters, his twin, Elaine and Burney Ivey of Bethlehem, Ga., Arlene Kittle of Ranger, Patsy and Eddie Bryant of Fairmount; special nephew and caregiver, Jonathan Woodward of Calhoun; several other nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.


Services to celebrate the life of Mr. Wayne Townsend will be held Sunday, Sept. 15, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Salacoa (Greeley) Baptist Church in Cherokee County, with Reverend Reggie Temples officiating. He will be laid to rest beside his daughter in the church cemetery with, Bailey Townsend, Kirk Townsend, Jason Ivey, Dane Kittle, Austin Kittle and Eric Moss honored to serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Jonathan Woodward, Luke Swanson, Michael Johnson and Melinda Croft.  Masonic Graveside services will be provided by Waleska Masonic Lodge #57. Military Graveside honors will be provided by Dalton Masonic Lodge #112.  


The family will receive friends at Ponders Fairmount Chapel, from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Saturday and after 10:00 a.m. Sunday until the service hour.
